Self Evidence: Photographs by Woodman, Arbus, Mapplethorpe
The latest show in the Artist Rooms series is a fascinating trio of photographers who use selfportraiture in very different ways. Francesca Woodman’s elusive depiction of herself half- vanishing into the walls of derelict houses are an opposite pole to Robert Mapplethorpe’s take on the genre, gazing at us unflinchingly, even as he confronts his own death. Diane Arbus’ works are not strictly selfportraits, but the images chosen by her for an intimate portfolio is surely a portrait of her preferences and concerns. Not to be missed.
