Thatcher: A Very British Revolution
Forty years since Margaret Thatcher became prime minister, this five part documentary series examines the irresistible rise and dramatic downfall of the woman who changed British politics with her force of will and free market ideology. In this episode, victory in the 1979 general election propels her into power as Britain’s first female prime minister. On the steps of Downing Street she promises “hope” and “harmony” but her first two years are characterised by disruption, division and a deep recession as heavy industries founder and unemployment and social unrest increases.
Featuring interviews with the surviving members of her first cabinet, John Nott, Michael Heseltine, Norman Fowler and David Howell, as well as behind- thescenes figures including her former protection officer Barry Stevens.
