Baize of glory /Higgins and Maguire win the World Cup for Scotland

-

John Higgins and Stephen Maguire combined to win the Snooker World Cup for Scotland yesterday, beating Zhou Yuelong and Liang Wenbo of China in the final.

Having seen off Wales and the other Chinese pairing of Ding Junhui and Yan Bingtao in the earlier knockout rounds, the experienced Scottish duo subjected China B to a 4-0 whitewash in Wuxi.

After winning their respective singles openers, Higgins and Maguire triumphed in the doubles to go 3-0 up in the best-of-seven clash.

Maguire then secured the trophy for Scotland in the following frame against Liang, gaining a measure of revenge for the pair’s loss in the 2015 final to a Chinese line-up that also featured Zhou.

Higgins was also part of the last Scotland team to win a World Cup tournament, doing so alongside Stephen Hendry and Alan Mcmanus in 1996.
