Hearts lose to Montrose as Well win and Dons, Dundee and Utd draw

Hearts manager Craig Levein declared himself “reasonably happy” despite a young-looking Tynecastle side losing 2-0 at Arbroath.

The returning Jamie Walker sat out due to a knee injury.

Luke Donnelly turned in Bobby Linn’s cross to open the scoring for Arbroath on 21 minutes. Steven Maclean struck the bar before Hearts started the second half with only one player – Cameron Logan – who had started the first.

Linn set up Steven Doris for a late second.

Levein said: “There were some good things and there were things we could have done better. We did not move the play fast enough.”

“However, it was good to play the kids and I am reasonably happy with it.”

Aberdeen’s game against Welsh side Connah’s Quay Nomads ,who had travelled to Cork to experience playing a Scottish side ahead of facing Kilmarnock in next week’s Europa League first qualifying round, was goalless.

The Dons, who start their European adventure against Finns ROPS Rovaniemi, saw Shay Logan, pictured, and Sam Cosgrove go close.

Motherwell won 3-0 at Linfield, Christophe­r Long scoring on his debut and Peter Hartley as well as Jake Carroll adding goals.

Two Ross County teams defeated Forres Mechanics 11-0 and Nairn County 3-0 with nine different players on the scoresheet.

Dundee’s 16-year-old Lyall Cameron hit a fine winner in a 2-1 success at Brechin after Declan Mcdaid’s opener was cancelled out by a trialist for the hosts.

Dundee United’s Nicky Clark notched a secondhalf equaliser to cancel out Liam Smith’s own goal in a 1-1 draw at East Fife.

Inverness Caley Thistle new boys James Keatings and Nikolay Todorov scored as one Caley XI defeated Clachnacud­din 2-0 with fellow new recruit Mitch Curry on target as another Caley side saw off Strathspey 6-3.

Dunfermlin­e ’s Kyle Turner lashed in as the Pars secured a 1-0 win at Forfar and

Alloa defeated visitors Albion Rovers 2-1. Andy Stirling scored and Rovers’ Ousman See equalising before Adam Brown’s penalty won the day.

Stephen Dobbie thundered in from long distance before a minute had been played in Queen of the South’s 2-1 closed doors win over Airdrie. The Diamonds levelled through Callum Fordyce with Dobbie hitting the winner from the penalty spot.

Raith Rovers’ 1-0 home triumph over Stirling also came from a spot-kick.

Montrose defeated visitors Formartine 2-1, while East of Scotland hosts Linlithgow Rose enjoyed a 2-1 win over Clyde and Stranraer went down 3-1 to Blyth Spartans. Edinburghc­ity defeateday­outhfulstj­ohnstone 2-0 and Elgin Citybeat Jeanfield Swifts 7-1.
