Backs to the wall

Brexit MEPS were right to turn their back and the outrage over this simple act of defiance shows that nuance and balance are gone in politics, says Scotsman columnist and MEP Brian Monteith.

Unfortunately, this “dignified gesture” has been used before . . . in 1936. Nazi Party deputies turned their backs on the speaker in the Berlin Reichstag. Joseph Goebbels can be seen writing on the bench of the person sitting behind him. Beware of the company you keep.

Alan Murray This gesture also showed lack of respect for the 48 per cent who voted Remain. I found the Lib Dems’ T-shirts equally disrespectful and childish. Neither group showed our nation in a good light. We need to move away from tantrum politics and seek a compromise like adults.

They wouldn’t turn their back for the pay cheque from the EU though, would they?

Peter Burnat

Whilst we remain members of this unholy alliance we are entitled to representation. We the taxpayers continue to pay in so I have no problems with our MEPS being paid.

I’d have more respect for them if they did as Sein Feinn do and just not show up and take seats, money and pension. Hypocrites the lot of them.

Sinclair Pirie They aren’t representing us, they are deliberately trying to put a spanner in the works. Unless you condone that?
