Fearnley suffers ‘horrendous’ defeat
Edinburgh schoolboy Jacob Fearnley lost in the first round of the Boys’ Singles yesterday and admitted: “That washorrendous.”
The 17-year-old hasn’t played much recently because of exams at Merchiston Castle but refused to use that as an excuse for his 6-3, 6-2 defeat by Romania’s Nicholas Ionel.
He said: “I did nothing right at all. Absolutely horrendous. You play one bad game at this level and the opponent will capitalise. I just got worse and worse.”
Fearnley, who heads to the US next month to continue his tennis education at Texas Christian University, is also in the doubles alongside fellow-scot Connor Thomson. The pair have won their last two tournaments.
