Swinging in the rain is order of day at practice

- By MARTIN DEMPSTER

Around 12mm of rain fell on The Renaissance Club course on the second official practice day for the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open, with more wet weather on the way this week.

In the at times torrential rain, many preferred the comfort of the players’ lounge in the clubhouse rather than being out on the course or practice area, with more than a few having left for the day when it finally dried up around 5pm. Another downpour is expected to hit the East Lothian coast this morning before moving through by midday, although showers are expected to break out again in the afternoon, with a slight chance of a thunderstorm.

The rainfall on Wednesday could be up to 10mm then close to the same again on Thursday, when a humid morning will be followed by afternoon downpours and scattered thunderstorms.

Friday will be drier with periods of sunshine, but a few showers will be possible in the afternoon before the weekend turns dry, with more sunshine likely for Sunday’s final round. The wet weather didn’t stop Scottish No 1 Russell Knox from having fun as he got himself ready to try to claim a second Rolex Series title after landing the Irish Open last summer.

“I actually thoroughly enjoyed slashing it on the range today in the rain,” he reported, smiling. “It’s been a while since I put on the rain suit and just hit balls on the range in the rain.

“Last week in Ireland [in his title defence at Lahinch], I played nine holes in the rain, and I did horribly. I kind of wanted to practise a little bit today, even though it was pouring rain.”
