Frustration as error proves costly for Reid

- By MARK WOODS

Grace Reid confessed her frustration after coming up short of a medal for the second time at diving’s world championships by finishing eighth in the 3-metre springboard in South Korea yesterday.

The Scot, 23, had already booked an Olympic berth by reaching the final in Gwangju but saw her hopes sunk by a mistake in the third round to end with a score of 286.95 as China’s Shi Tingmao took gold.

“It was just really frustrating as sometimes it just doesn’t click,” Reid said. “To finish top eight and not be satisfied is a weird mixture of feelings. It is a real positive that I’ve qualified for the World Series and I get to compete against those top girls. It’s a massive plus, but I’m just a bit frustrated I couldn’t have a little bit more form.”

Reid will link up with Tom Daley in today’s mixed synchro with the pair hoping to beat their silver of two years ago. “I’m hoping to relax and just enjoy it and hopefully that’ll help me find my rhythm again,” she added.

Daley and Noah Williams both reached the final of the 10m platform to secure Tokyo 2020 places with the former, who qualified third, bidding to defend his world title this weekend and Williams, who progressed in sixth, in with a shout.

“Of course I would love to defend the world title,” said Daley. “It’ll be tough as those Chinese guys are pretty special and I also have the Mixed Synchro event before then as well.”
