Who will be the next chancellor?
These are the leading candidates to succeed Philip Hammond as chancellor if he resigns, as expected, on Wednesday:
Sajid Javid
The home secretary, who made it to the final four in the race to become the next Tory leader, is now widely believed to have his sights set on becoming chancellor and is the current favourite.
Liz Truss
The Chief Secretary to the Treasury holds the second most senior ministerial post in the department and has made little secret of her ambition to become the UK’S first female Chancellor.
Michael Gove
Since being eliminated from the race to succeed Theresa May, the environment secretary has been tipped to retain a Cabinet post under his old rival, thanks partly to his pro-brexit credentials.
Matt Hancock
The health secretary was quick to throw his weight behind Mr Johnson after withdrawing from the leadership race. He previously worked as an economist at the Bank of England.
Andrea Leadsom
The former leader of the House of Commons was among Mr Johnson’s early rivals for the leadership, but has since backed him and would be a strong pro-leave voice in the Cabinet.
Amber Rudd
Despite being pro-remain and publicly criticising Mr Johnson in the past, the work and pensions secretary recently dropped her opposition to a no-deal Brexit and is said to be keen to stay in the Cabinet.
Jeremy Hunt
If he is crowned as prime minister as is widely expected, Mr Johnson may choose to offer an olive branch to his rival by moving the Foreign Secretary to the top of the Treasury.
