Group winners County complete perfect record with victory over Forfar

Ross County booked their place in the last 16 by completing their Group B games with a 100 per cent record by seeing off visitors Forfar Athletic 2-0.

The Dingwall side scored on 15 minutes when Michael Gardyne sent an effort towards goal and Brian Graham flicked home from six yards. Chancescam­eandwentbe­fore Graham headed their second on 76 minutes.

St Johnstone claimed their first win in defeating Brechin City 4-0 at Mcdiarmid Park where Scott Tanser converted a penalty on six minutes after Chris Mclaughlin had tripped Matthew Kennedy and they added a second on 33 minutes when Chris Kane netted from close range.

Saints scored again with 16 minutes left when Callum Hendry headed past Lewis Mcminn and Kennedy drilled in a fourth two minutes later.

Partick Thistle completed their four games in Group F in top spot with a tight 3-2 win over Clyde at Firhill and Gary Caldwell’s side cannot be caught.

The Jags opened their account on 12 minutes when Lewis Mansell picked out Shea Gordon and the striker headed home. Clyde levelled 14 minutes later when Tony Wallace nodded in from a corner. Former Scotland striker Kenny Miller was brought on by Thistle at half-time and within three minutes he had glanced in a Joe Cardle free-kick. Gordon scored his second goal of the evening just after the hour mark when he turned in a Ryan Williamson cross, but Clyde were back in the game when Stuart Bannigan scored at the wrong end.

Airdrie’s hopes of being one of the best runners-up took a knock when they drew 2-2 with Queen’s Park at the Penny Cars Stadium before winning a marathon penalty shootout 12-11.

Ciaran Summers fired the Spiders in front after five minutes, the Diamonds equalised nine minutes after the break through Nat Wedderburn, Queen’s led again via Jack Purdue’s curling shotand Airdrie replied when substitute Calum Gallagher turned in a long throw with his first touch.
