In responding to Tom Wood’s article about the likely link between faith schools and sectarian violence, Michael Docherty correctly identifies the genuine discrimina­tion experience­d by Catholics in the last century( Letters ,18 September).

He argues that the existence of Catholic schools in countries with less sectariani­sm than Scotland means they can’t be to blame.

While the unique historical links between The North of Ireland and the west coast of Scotland should be understood, it seems naive to suggest 100 years of “them” and “us” schooling doesn’t cement and perpetuate division.
