Naga Munchetty has been rebuked by the BBC for remarks she made on air around Donald Trump, and the corporation has defended its action by confirming that “the impartiality of the BBC does not extend to racism, which is not a matter of opinion or debate”.
The job of TV news readers and presenters is to provide the facts, not to give their personal opinions or views, whatever they may be.
The problem, however, was exacerbated by Naga’s co host Dan Walker, who was allowed to cross-examine her, and she gave fairly full answers to show exactly what she thought.
Dan Walker should not have asked questions and Naga should not have replied – the fact that they did shows that they did not follow BBC guidelines.
