Planetary explorer: Professor shares Nobel Prize for Physics after discoverin­g world beyond solar system

Professor Didier Queloz of Cambridge University - joint winner of the 2019 Nobel Prize for Physics with two other scientists told a news conference yesterday that his discovery in 1995 of the first planet outside our solar system had raised the possibil ity of other life in the universe. “I do hope that this Nobel Prize will help give a further boost for this fascinatin­g question when we think about life on another planet,” he said. Prof Queloz and his colleague Michel Mayor were honoured for their planetary discovery, while the other half of the award was given to James Peebles “for theoretica­l discoverie­s in physical cosmology”
