#LORDPROVOST

The Lord Provost of Glasgow has been criticised after it emerged that her expenses included claims for 23 pairs of shoes. It has been reported that Eve Bolander submitted receipts totalling more than £8,000 over a 28-month period.

@Kirstystricklan said: “It might be within the rules, but it is a tone deaf at best to kit yourself out so expensively to represent a city that has such chronic poverty and homelessness levels.”

@Notamaybot commented: “She is allowed to spend £5,000 every year as that’s the position allowance. What does it matter what she spends it on as long as she doesn’t go above the allowance? She’s been in position for over two years and has spent £8,000 out of her £10,000 allowance.”

@Lesleymcdowell1 posted: As a middle-aged woman (I’m probably older than her!), you do spend more to look nice/smart etc, and this is Glasgow – women like their clothes. I agree the optics are not the best but ‘woman underspends clothes allowance’ is also a possible headline here.”

@Erwhatdidyousay wondered: “What is the budget for men in a similar situation?” @Jennylconstable said: “I’m obsessed with the hosiery budget. She could have bought 145 Primark thongs with that.” @Ironymeter added: “Her critics would be complaining about her failure to engender civic pride if she didn’t make an effort.”

#HMSENDEAVOUR

A replica of HMS Endeavour is in New Zealand marking the 250th anniversary of the first Europeans arriving – sparking celebrations and protests.

@Garysyms commented: “Indigenous peoples around the world have suffered ethnic cleansing, genocide, rape, slavery, theft, invasion purely for the betterment of Europeans. Inequality for indigenous people is still being allowed and encouraged to this day. ”

@david_caughlin said: “I imagine some people weren’t excited to see it first time around, either.”

@Robstaveley posted: “What about all the good that was done by Europe to give the world the civilisation we have today!”

@Messenger_augur added: “If we survive what we’re doing to this planet and we make it into space, God help any species we find who are weaker than we are. We’d repeat the same crimes.”
