If the average motorist who whines about 20mph zones actually tried cycling or walking about our city they would see how beneficial this would be for everyone. I’m a motorist (love my car) but I also cycle and walk very regularly and when the initiative started, and most people were obeying the limits, I saw an immediate and massive improvemen­t in my environmen­t when I was trying to get around the city by bike or on foot. We are now almost back to square one a few years later..

Dunnomuch Edinburgh Council leaders are investigat­ing giving out free bus passes to people on low incomes in a bid to support 80,000 residents living in poverty.

It may sound like a good idea, but it will open the door to every kind of fiddle. You’ll get lots of people pleading poverty in order to get free travel. This surely has to be a non-starter.

Try making it difficult for short-term occupancy of flats and houses, for example Airbnb owners. Bring residents back to the city with affordable housing.
