Boroughmuir gain revenge after festival schooling

- By ALAN LORIMER

Boroughmuir used the experience gained from taking part in the Merchiston Tri Nations Festival to turn the tables on Biggar under-18s in the top match in the Shogun Conference on Saturday by winning 35-21 at Meggetland.

Boroughmuir ran in five tries through full-back Josh Howard, wing Callum Brown, centre Cameron Hogg, stand-off Stuart Dobson and scrum-half Callum Marjoribanks, with Dobson converting all five.

“After losing to Biggar in the first game of this season’s Conference, we really wanted to make sure we came out on top with a win at home,” said Boroughmuir’s Academy manager Scott Anderson, and the win will raise confidence ahead of this Saturday’s match against Stirling County. For their part, Stirling were less tested in their game against Perthshire, who lost 50-0 to the Bridgehaugh side.

Elsewhere in the Shogun Conference, West of Scotland produced their best performance of the season in their 14-17 defeat to Ayr/ Wellington, all of the Burnbrae points scored by Sean Carden from three penalty goals and a try. At Canal Field in Inverness, Highland romped to a 84-29 win over a depleted Hamilton team but it did little to prepare Highland for their visit to Hartree Mill this Saturday.

“It will be a tough one away to Biggar on Saturday, but we have our Glasgow player Niall Doherty back and he will add a bit of punch,” said Highland coach John Carson.

In the Borders semijunior league, Jed Thistle made it five wins from five rounds after a 36-25 victory over Melrose Wasps.

Another club with a perfect record this season is Deeside/garioch, who achieved their fifth win of the season with a 40-26 win against Mackie in the Lancer (Grampian) conference.

Allan Glen’s boosted their points total in the Galant A Conference with an away 32-31 win over Dumfries Saints 32-31 to put pressure on leaders GHA, who sit top of the table with a perfect record of seven wins from seven rounds.
