A Halloween fancy dress shop has been slammed for selling an “offensive” and “inappropriate” Nazi uniform. The £35 ‘Gestapo Officer’ costume includes a hat, button up shirt, trousers, boots and red armband.

If I dressed as Julius Caesar, who also slaughtered millions, would it still be disgraceful?

Billy Easdon As Gestapo is short for Geheim Staats Polizei or secret state police the usual “uniform” for officers was plain clothes. That said with their trench coats and fedoras they didn’t exactly hide.

John Duffy I was born and raised in one of the countries occupied and violated by the Nazis during the Second World War. I can see no reason whatsoever to dress up like a Gestapo officer, and even less so contemplating the apparent rise of neo-nazis in these days. Extremely bad taste, is what this is.

The only time it’s acceptable to wear a Nazi uniform is if you are portraying a Nazi officer or soldier in a stage play or film.
