A Halloween fancy dress shop has been slammed for selling an “offensive” and “inappropriate” Nazi uniform. The £35 ‘Gestapo Officer’ costume includes a hat, button up shirt, trousers, boots and red armband.

If I dressed as Julius Caesar, who also slaughtered millions, would it still be disgraceful?

Billy Easdon As Gestapo is short for Geheim Staats Polizei or secret state police the usual “uniform” for officers was plain clothes. That said with their trench coats and fedoras they didn’t exactly hide.

Roger Booth

It’s in poor taste, absolutely. But you’d certainly be dressing up as a monster – can’t argue with that.

Torkel Svenson Hagström

Not appropriate fancy dress costume? Really? What about clowns, skeletons, ghosts, vampires, the devil, Frankenstein, witches and warlocks, Margaret Thatcher, Piers Morgan. . . There are bound to be some who insist on being offended, unless of course they try to see it for what it is – a fancy dress costume.

Jim Egan

“Clowns, skeletons, ghosts, vampires, the devil, Frankenstein, witches and warlocks,” et al, didn’t plan and execute the murders of millions of people.

Jimmy Laing

Just make sure you give Herr Flick the soggy chips!

Brian Warrender

Just as well Lazio fans aren’t visiting Glasgow tomorrow.

Patrick Mc

Would people have the same reaction to Mao jackets? Just asking.

John Duffy I was born and raised in one of the countries occupied and violated by the Nazis during the Second World War. I can see no reason whatsoever to dress up like a Gestapo officer, and even less so contemplating the apparent rise of neo-nazis in these days. Extremely bad taste, is what this is.

Gjermund Austvik

The only time it’s acceptable to wear a Nazi uniform is if you are portraying a Nazi officer or soldier in a stage play or film.
