More punishment for Saints as City advance
Sergio Aguero fired a double as Manchester City piled further misery on shell-shocked Southampton last night.
The Saints, mauled 9-0 by Leicester City four days earlier, succumbed 3-1 as Pep Guardiola’s side eased into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup at the Etihad Stadium.
The Argentine striker struck his 11th and 12th goals of the season, adding to Nicolas Otamendi’s opener, while Jack Stephens’ late strike for Saints was merely a consolation.
City gave a debut to 18-yearold Tommy Doyle whose two grandfathers – Mike Doyle and Glyn Pardoe – were stalwarts of the City side that won the old First Division title in 1968, the FA Cup in 1969 and the League Cup in 1970 Everton also advanced as goals by Mason Holgate, pictured, and Richarlison secured a 2-0 win over Watford at Goodison Park. Holgate headed his first goal for the Toffees in the 72nd minute, and ex-hornets man Richarlison struck in stoppage time.
There will be no repeat of
Burton’s fairytale run to the semi-finals. The League One side knocked out Aston Villa, Burnley, Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough last term but Leicester were too strong at the Pirelli Stadium, securing a 3-1 win.
Burton, who added Bournemouth to their list of scalps in the previous round, did pull a goal back through Liam Boyce after strikes by Kelechi Iheanacho and Youri Tielemans had given Leicester a twogoal cushion at half-time, but the Foxes sealed a last-eight spot for the third year in a row whensubstitutejamesmaddison struck in the final minute.
