Asda sales slip as public confidence takes knock
Asda has suffered a fall in its quarterly sales amid “customer concerns over Brexit”.
The Us-owned supermarket chain reported a 0.5 per cent dip in like-forlike sales in the quarter to the end of September, compared with growth of 0.5 per cent in the previous three months.
Chief executive and president Roger Burnley said customers have had “little respite” from political and economic uncertainty in recent months, which has influenced spending.
Asda and rival Sainsbury’s attempted to counteract the competition of discounters such as Aldi and Lidl by agreeing a mega-merger last year, but the move collapsed after it was blocked by the CMA.
