Mcginn’s landmark moment spoiled by bad luck and bad finishing

- By MOIRA GORDON

Stephen Mcginn’s 200th match for St Mirren may have been a landmark occasion but it would have been even more enjoyable had it not been for bad luck, poor finishing and questionable refereeing decisions, according to the Paisley captain.

On top for large periods of Tuesday night’s game against Hibernian, they still lost 2-1.

“That wasn’t how I wanted to mark my 200th appearance. But it was a hard match to describe,” Mcginn said. “For long spells we were excellent but decisive moments in both boxescostus.inthesecondhalf we really sensed something.

“We felt if we got an equaliser we would go on to win it. Some games you can just feel it building. But then we don’t score and don’t take good opportunities. We then lose a penalty on the break and then get one back when it was too late.” There was a pivotal moment in the second half when a flurry of bookings for Hibs disrupted the game but the fact that one of them, when goalkeeper Chris Maxwell charged out his box and clattered Kyle Magennis, wasn’t a red frustrated Mcginn.

“With the goalkeeper booking, if I dive in like that I’m getting a red card. It’s a dangerous tackle. The ref made his decision but if the goalie doesn’t bring Kyle down you never know where he might end up. It was a good game to watch but that’s no consolation.”

But, given the double century, it is a game Mcginn will not forget. “It’s something I’ll look back on and be really proud of. I remember 200 games ago getting on up at Inverness for my debut and I remember number 100 against Ayr at home. That day I set the target of 200. I’m still only 30 so I’d love to make it to 300 games.”
