Manchester United squandered the chance to move into Champions League contention after being held to a 2-2 home draw by Aston Villa.

For a substantial period in the first half the visitors controlled proceedings with a game plan centred around the influential Jack Grealish.

Villa’s captain scored the opener and presented all manner of problems before Marcus Rashford forced an own goal from keeper Tom Heaton minutes before the interval.

When Victor Lindelof put United ahead in the second half, that should have been the signal to see out the game, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side again conceded an equaliser, with Tyrone Mings volleying home just four minutes later as they lost the initiative.

Freddie Ljungberg failed to end Arsenal’s winless streak as his first game in caretaker charge of the Gunners ended in a 2-2 draw at Norwich City.

The former midfielder took over following the sacking of Unai Emery on Friday and immediately made his mark on the side, bringing in the likes of Shkodran Mustafi, Mesut Ozil and Granit Xhaka.

However, they went behind in the 21st minute when Teemu Pukki’s shot deflected in.

Pierre-emerick Aubameyang levelled in controversial circumstances eight minutes later from the penalty spot after Christoph Zimmermann handled a free-kick. After Tim Krul saved the striker’s first spot-kick, it was ordered to be retaken following encroachment and Aubameyang made no mistake the second time.

Todd Cantwell then put Norwich ahead again on the stroke ofhalf-time,butaubameyang’s second grabbed a point.

Wolves and Sheffield United both continued to enjoy fine runs after sharing the points from a 1-1 draw at Molineux.

Matt Doherty’s 64th-minute effort cancelled out Lys Mousset’s early opener for the visiting Blades.
