Unbeaten Watsonians’ toughest test yet at Bulls

- By GARY HEATLY

Top of the table Watsonians take their unbeaten record to Millbrae to face second-placed Ayrshire Bulls in the FOSROC Super6 this afternoon (3pm).

The Edinburgh side travel west for the rearranged match with five wins out of five to date, their most recent one coming at Meggetland against Boroughmuir Bears last Sunday.

Since they lost on the opening day of the season to Heriot’s, the Bulls have won four games on the spin and are only three points behind Watsonians, meaning this one should be a cracker.

For the away game Watsonians are without influential second-row Brian Leitch and vice captain Morgan Inness, so Finlay Simpson and Michael Badenhorst come into the pack to replace them. Hooker Campbell Wilson also earns a start as does winger Angus Guthrie.

“Our aim is to fix some key areas of our game that weren’t up to scratch against Boroughmuir and then put in a disciplined 80-minute performance,” said Watsonians head coach Fergus Pringle.

Lewis Anderson and Ruairidh Sayce come into the Bulls’ front-row, with Gavin Wilson in at seven.

Their head coach Pete Murchie said: “We will need to raise the performance level again, and for the full 80 minutes, to get the desired result.”

In the other rearranged match today thirdplaced Heriot’s host fifthplaced Stirling County at Goldenacre (2pm).

“The team put in a strong performance last week against the Southern Knights and will be confident going into another home game,” Heriot’s head coach Phil Smith stated.

Sean Kennedy earns a first start for County, who have four Glasgow Warriors released for this one. Scotland cap Grant Stewart is one of them who will look to make an impact from the bench.

“This is a huge match for us,” County head coach Ben Cairns said. “We have been in contention in every match, but so far have only picked up one win.”
