The public has rallied round TV personality Phillip Schofield, who has announced he is gay after 27 years of marriage, having revealed the news in an emotional Instagram story.

@richardosman tweeted: “When you create a new entertainment show and start discussing who should host, the first name on the list is always Phillip Schofield. That’s a fact.”

@Jerezion_ chuckled: “Nothing wrong with Phillip Schofield being gay, everything wrong with him being a Tory gay.”

@stonewalluk commented: “Incredibly brave and moving announcement from Phillip Schofield this morning. It takes a lot of courage and is always a hugely personal decision to be open about who you are. Congrats Phillip.”

@Itzjustlucy agreed: “Phillip Schofield coming out as gay after all these years is proof it’s never too late to speak your truth and be true to yourself. So proud, how brave. How wonderful!”

@Liam_beattie pointed out: “Just a little reminder, no, you didn’t ‘always know’ Phillip Schofield was gay. Only he did.”

@Comradeceecee

commented: “Very, very moving coming out message from Phillip Schofield. A reminder that we do not see everyone’s struggles.”

The government has named Karen Pierce as the new ambassador to the US. Dame Karen – who is currently the UK’S permanent representative to the United Nations – becomes the first woman in the post.

@RMI14123362 tweeted: “We had an ambassador who stood up to Trump’s people before, so obviously he absolutely had to go, so I don’t hold up much hope for this one.”

But @Hornedpoet warmly welcomed the announcement: “As an American citizen, let me welcome Ambassador Karen Pierce to our nation. As an emissary for the mother country, your work is of utmost importance.”

@Univoxonline commented: “Another glass ceiling shattered. Is the UK doing enough for gender equality in the workplace though?”

@Nairalovers1 added: “Britain’s new US Ambassador confirmed as Karen Pierce – who Trump called ‘fab’.”

@Martinwiltshi15 reckoned: “I’m looking forward to Karen Pierce putting Donny Trump in his place.”
