Celtic to the fore after seeing off Spartans

Celtic became the first team from the four groups to qualify for the quarter-finals of the League Cup after beating Spartans 4-1 at Ainslie Park. The win put them on seven points from their three games, with Spartans finishing on six.

The Edinburgh side could still go through as one of the two best runners-up. However, that won’t be known until after re-arranged games have been played in the other three groups. Glasgow City and holders Hibernian received byes into the quarter-finals.

Summer Green, Sarah Ewens and subs Kathleen Mcgovern and Josephine Giard got the Celtic goals.

In the other Group A game, St Johnstone beat Glasgow Women 3-1.

Rangers are likely to also qualify after making it two wins from two in Group B. French Under-19 internatio­nal Lisa Martinez got two goals and Northern Ireland forward Megan Bell the other in a 3-0 win at Hamilton.

Hearts beat Stirling University 2-0 to lead Group C with six points, but have played all their three games. Aberdeen, who were held to a 0-0 draw by Boroughmui­r Thistle, will finish top if they win their rearranged away game against Stirling.

Forfar Farmington head Group D following a 2-1 win at Motherwell.
