A quarter of Scottish deaths linked to coronavirus have occurred in care homes, new figures suggest.

@Foresthills1903 said: “I don’t understand why care homes were not singled out as a priority considering they are full of closely contained high-risk patients. There cannot be many other places that are a higher risk if COVID-19 gets in.”

@missytigg gave an insider’s perspective: “I work in a care home and we are in the dark – it’s like we are in a time bubble and have only just been discovered, it’s ridiculous. .We have been silently just getting on with it for weeks.”

@yatesy02 commented: “Ask the CEOS of some care home companies why their customers, who pay vast amounts of money to be cared for, are being let down. Also why aren’t their staff being correctly supplied with PPE – this should be part of the employers’ duty of care. And finally, ask them where all the money is going.”

@Truthfulscot posted: “Care homes have been let down. Over-70s were asked to isolate but in group homes the transmission risk will be higher. Brave staff come and go without the higher standard of PPE. A high percentage of residents have dementia and will struggle to follow advice and guidance.”

@Anthonypeacock said: “Why is anyone surprised? Care homes contain people who are vulnerable already. Many have health conditions that unfortunately make them more susceptible. The weak have always been the first to suffer, it is just how nature works. We can only do so much before nature wins.”

@dogsmakesense observed: “The healthy obviously took the virus into the homes. Calling this as inevitable is a slippery slope to not caring. We failed to protect vulnerable people.”

@hidido66 added: “I believe a huge part of the problem is staff travelling to work in their uniforms. This should not be allowed. The same people walk by my window every day going to work in a local care home wearing their uniform with just a cardigan over it.”
