Multiple videos taken during the 8pm #Clapforourcarers on Thursday evening appeared to show London’s Westminster Bridge full of people clapping for NHS workers but not adhering to social distancing guidelines.

@Adam Catterall said: “Ignoring social distancing protocol, to applaud those who desperately need you to stick to social distancing protocol? These people have taken levels of stupidity to a new level.”

@linsteed commented: “Maybe I should arrange a date on Westminster Bridge with all my grandchildren who I am not allowed to see.”

@ferryhillbuston posted: Well I give up. Four weeks into lockdown – what’s the point if clowns congregate on Westminster Bridge clapping the very people that will be detrimentally affected by their behaviour.”

@edeysal said: “We’re not allowed to sit on a bench but Westminster Bridge is some coronavirus-free zone or something?”

@Spilleroftea commented: Two people eat some chips

together on a deserted beach. Police take out batons and teach them a lesson they won’t soon forget. Hundreds of people gather on Westminster Bridge so people can see how great they are for clapping. Police join in.”

@icole9 posted: “It’s OK. For a few minutes at 8pm on a Thursday the virus takes a break to allow everyone to clap together.”

@pragmaticape said: “It’s time to follow up the Thursday night clapathons with a Friday morning #Facepalmforourcarers where we collectively marvel at how thick we all are.”

@Louisetilbrook observed: “If this was a mass gathering to protest at the Government’s handling of the crisis I’m guessing it would be shut down quick.”

@Barrynl said: “That’s it. This species is just too stupid to survive. End the lockdown now and let’s just get it over with.”

@rather5ceptical added: “This is what happens when virtue signalling is more important than fighting a pandemic.”
