Stars proclaim their ‘Love of Scotland’ as fundraiser pulls in cash for PPE

- By RUSSELL JACKSON

Singer Annie Lennox has recorded a traditional Scottish folk song to raise money for NHS workers.

During the For The Love Of Scotland livestream last night, the Aberdeen singer recorded a version of Dream Angus.

She said: “Dream Angus is one of the most beautiful, traditional Scottish folk songs that I learned as a child.

“I thought in this time of lockdown, I can well imagine it must be difficult for mums and dads to soothe their kids to sleep, and a lot of people must be having sleeping challenges.

“So this is my lullaby for Scotland at this unprecedented time.”

Edith Bowman had earlier kicked off For The Love of Scotland livestream event.

The three-hour long show, hosted by Gigs in Scotland, featured actors such as James

Mcavoy, Peter Capaldi and Sam Heughan.

Radio DJ Bowman said: “We’re here to raise money for Masks for Scotland. Fifteen pounds buys a kit for one person – the masks and the gowns.

She said the show would be “three hours of various faces you recognise doing various things”.

Masks for Scotland is hoping to buy another 18,000 masks and 7,000 gowns by raising £200,000.

Singer KT Tunstall, Olympian and cycling great Sir Chris Hoy and Line of Duty star Martin Compston also took part.

The Masks For Scotland charity was set up by Prof Jill Belch, from the University of Dundee, and had raised almost £100,000 before last night’s event.

It was hoped the star-studded extravaganza would help the charity achieve its £200,000 target, which will be spent on personal protective equipment (PPE) for the NHS. Prof Belch said: “The medical teams who protect us must be protected too. We know that the bigger the viral load, the worse the disease.

“Day in, day out, these teams are exposed to very high viral loads.

“We must help save their lives, the lives of their families and their patients by providing correct PPE. This fundraiser will save lives – thank you so very much to all who donate.”
