UK investors have eye on biotech businesses

- By SCOTT REID

A quarter of UK investors are looking to back biological and medical technology businesses over the next two years, according to research.

Investment firm IW Capital said it had funded more than 40 growing small businesses since 2011, including Borrow my Doggy and Brewhouse and Kitchen.

It pointed to a “marked appetite” from investors to back businesses that were making a positive difference to the future or their local community. The firm’s study of some 2,000 investors dissects investment trends, the goals of investors and the future of funding options for businesses during and after the Covid crisis.

Chief executive Luke Davis said: “This research reflects some of the trends that we have seen from our investor base. To see that such a large number of investors in the UK are looking to invest into technology companies, such as those in the biotech industry, shows the desire that exists to support innovation in the UK.”
