International Olympic Committee chief Thomas Bach said the Tokyo Games would have to be called off if the event cannot be held next year due to the COVID-19 crisis.

“IOC should pay the Japanese for every penny of infrastructure they put in place to host the games then.”
@Htawfiq1 said: “Scrap the event. Forget the Olympics Games. Spend the money on what people with common sense would, like tackling coronavirus and reducing climate change.”
@ghsotapple_ari said: “A lot of althetes already have to suffer a year setback but making all of them wait for 2024 to compete again is cruel, especially to the athletes who are about to age out by then.”
@andrew_omahoney wrote: “For a virus that 99% recover from. Whoever is scared doesn’t have to attend.”
@Mikaelyaron said: “Just have them in Antarctica, no virus there.”
@stacydjg said: “Your heart goes out to all those athletes who gave up their lives to pursue Olympic dream!”
@alexzawodniak said: “I don’t think the world will have the Olympic Games anywhere for at least 6 more years. Fear of #Covid-19 and a major resurgence will always be around. I feel bad for Japan, but the only thing certain is uncertainty.”
#THANKYOUNICOLA
The First Minister’s handling of the Covid-19 crisis continued to draw praise.
@Bjcruickshank said: “Hi @Nicolasturgeon I have heard some political statements in my time, yours today was the best ever. Your clear & concise delivery was terrific & in stark contrast to the mumblings & confused messages from the UK Prime Minister.”
@Greig said: “I don’t agree with everything she says. I don’t agree with every policy of the SNP. But I appreciate how the FM has handled this Pandemic. Honest. Open. Factual. Human. Every day being there for everyone in Scotland. And showing guidance to the RUK as well.”
@Wgsaraband said:
“A tale of two nations: #Thankyounicola trends in Scotland, #Whereisboris in England. Perhaps it’s because the first thing about leadership is actually showing up and not cowering from the responsibilities expected from your role. And I’m very thankful to have Nicola at the helm.”
