Former FA chief Bevington backs Mcclaren to thrive in Scottish game

- By ALAN PATTULLO

Dundee United have still to make a decision on their new manager as Steve Mcclaren waits to hear if he will be offered the chance to replace Robbie Neilson.

The former England manager is a clear favourite to take over the reins at Tannadice but it is understood United are still interviewing candidates. Malky

Mackay remains a candidate after the SFA gave United the green light to speak to the performance director last weekend. Austin Macphee, who was yesterday confirmed as staying on the Northern Ireland coaching staff under new manager Ian Baraclough, has been interviewed.

Former United striker Jon Dalyhasalsobeenspokentoby sporting director Tony Asghar, who will inform States-based owner Mark Ogren of his preferred choice. Another candidate is Tranmere’s Scottish manager Micky Mellon. Mcclaren’s potential recruitment has caught the imagination of United fans. The former England manager has known Asghar for several years and is understood to be keen to resume his managerial career in Scotland.

Former English FA managing director Adrian Bevington believes Mcclaren should be excited by the prospect of relaunching his career north of the Border. “It is an attractive proposition for Steve because you can build something there,” said Bevington, who worked with Mcclaren during his ill-fated 15-month spell as England manager.

“It is an exciting time for Dundee United and it could be just the right move for Steve to bring players through, develop players. If people like Lawrence Shankland are going to be there next season, he will benefit from Steve’s coaching.

“It could be a mutually beneficial move for Steve and Dundee

United. Steve has shown previously that he is prepared to travel – he has been to Germany and Holland – and Scottish football can be an attractive proposition.”

“It is an opportunity to improve, rather than rebuild, your reputation,” added Bevington. “I could see him going in to Dundee United in the same way he went in to Twente Enschede, not one of the biggest clubs in Holland but still with a good pedigree and a rich history.”
