Government minister Michael Gove told the BBC’S Andrew Marr Show yesterday that, unlike Scotland, face masks should not be mandatory in shops south of the Border.
@Thattimwalker exploded: “‘No need’ to wear masks in England. I mean, look at the Covid-19 deaths reported yesterday: England: 147, Scotland: 0, Wales: 1, N. Ireland: 0.”
@Juliest101 agreed: “You’ve got to give this government some credit. The grit and determination they’ve shown in going all-out for a second wave is astonishing. Literally using every sinew.”
But @Mrrobtyson had doubts: “Ah yes, the mythical ‘second wave’. When is that coming please? And have you predicted its imminent arrival on Twitter before at all?”
@magnatom pointed out: “In Scotland we’ve gone from hardly anyone wearing a mask in shops to everyone wearing masks, all in the space of a day. It works. The science is clear. It must be mandatory for the benefit of all.”
@paulpau1968 reckoned: “I would happily see Michael Gove do a tour (maybe several)of the coronavirus medical wards so that he would have a greater understanding of the need for people to wear face masks in the public realm.”
@I_am_the_robin smiled: “Good old Gove the scientist.”
@Zebsmattz concluded: “It’s an easy rule to follow. Keep the message simple, none of this ‘stay alert’ rubbish.”

@Markshardlow agreed: “Sad news. I rewatched the 66 World Cup final and 70 FA Cup final over lockdown. Great memories of him as player, pundit and manager.”
@henrywinter tweeted: “Epitome of the word legend. A winner as well as a player. Inspirational manager and wonderful company. He lived the fullest of lives and enriched so many lives.”
@Paulmcgrath5 mourned: “Absolutely gutted. Father figure to me for 10 years, thanks for having faith in me. Sleep well, Jack, Love you.”
