Morikawa’s second PGA Tour title in just 24 starts

- By MARTIN DEMPSTER

Collin Morikawa claimed his second PGA Tour win in just 24 starts as he beat Justin Thomas in a playoff to win the Workday Charity Open at Muirfield Village.

The 23-year-old had made 22 consecutive cuts before seeing that streak come to an end in the Travelers Championship in Connecticut a- fortnight ago.

He then sat out of the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit before wasting no time getting straight back into his stride in the first of a double-header on the US circuit at the Ohio venue.

Morikawa, pictured, birdied two of the last five holes as he closed with a six-under-par 66 to finish with a 19-under 269 total.

Thomas, who started the day with a two-shot lead before quickly falling two behind, had victory in his grasp after following a birdie at the 14th with an eagle-3 at the next hole.

But the 2017 US PGA champion dropped shots at both the 16th and 18th, where he was unable to convert a 12-footer for victory, to finish on the same mark as Morikawa after signing off with a 72.

Thomas, who was bidding to land his 13th win on the circuit, then holed a monster 50-foot birdie putt at the first hole only for Morikawa to follow him in from 24 feet.

Playing the 18th hole again, Thomas missed a similar putt to the one he’d had to win it in regulation play before seeing his tee shot at the third play-off hole finish behind a tree.

“I’m excited right now. I’m so happy,” said Morikawa after a par-4 proved good enough to clinch it. “Justin was fighting all day after starting bogey-bogey and I just wanted to give myself a chance down the stretch.” Norwegian Viktor Hovland, another of the tour’s rising stars, closed with a 71 to finish four shots behind in third, with Englishman Ian Poulter sharing fifth on 12-under following a 70.
