The Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) has downgraded 124,564 pupils’ results despite no exams being sat – 93.1 per cent of all the moderated grades. Exam pass rates rose at every level and would have been the highest on record without the SQA downgrading some submitted results, Education Secretary John Swinney said.

Appalling that so many students who achieved higher grades at their prelim result and consistently scored higher grades in their course work throughout the year have been downgraded by the SQA. Shameful.

I wish the learners had had the chance to prove themselves. Very unfair.

How can a pupil who got 8As at National 5 level last year, got 5As in the Higher prelims and 5As for course work be downgraded to 5Bs?

June Gibb Just awful, system was very unfair. Submitted work not marked. It’s a meaningless set of results.

Audrey Campbell I’m sure the pupils will all want the opportunity to sit an exam How about that as an option – and if they get a better result it stands, if not take the given?

John King I’m just remembering the look on everyone’s faces the day the teacher gave out the prelim result and did the lecture on how lucky we were that wasn’t the real thing! Oh and that was more than 40 years ago. For many teachers that will have been one of their last meetings with the Class of Covid.

Judith Barron I’ve always felt too much importance was placed on how well you performed in exams, to me they don’t necessarily show that you understand the work but how well you can regurgitate the material. Perhaps this will allow a review of our education system and a move to an equal focus on course work throughout the year alongside exams.

My daughter was downgraded by two grades on one of her subjects she is very disappointed.

Karen Fraser It’s all well and good as long as your teacher who is grading you all term is fair. In my fifth year history class the teacher couldn’t stand me and told my parents I was going to fail. When marked in an independently assessed

exam I got an A in Higher history.

William Gilmour I think everyone should return to where they were in school in march they have missed so much.
