Food firms urged to adapt to new trends
Scotland’ s food and drink firms will need to tap into postlockdown trends such as more working and socialising at home to navigate a new landscape for the industry, according to a market expert.
Ceri Ritchie, head of food and drink at SAC Consulting which is part of Scotland’ s Rural College, said it will be more important than ever for firms in the sector to keep close to their customers, understand what influences their buying behaviour and make sure their products are meeting their needs.
“Socialising is largely happening at home with barbeques, parties and picnics and the great British staycation is a major opportunity – and not just for the summer season,” said Ritchie who has over 35 years’ experience in the industry.
“Businesses need to emphasise their community role, their place in the locality, their local story or to link to traditions, heritage celebrations, landmarks and activities. Can you provide the ‘ walkers’ picnic, the ‘ munro baggers’ lunch or the ‘ beach brunch’?” she said.
Ritchie also said many people working from home were potentially looking for easy to cook food and healthy snacks.
Although many shoppers will revert to getting the bulk of their shopping at the major supermarkets, research suggests a significant proportion will share their shopping budget over a number of outlets.
“If this is so, what can local food and drink businesses – the lockdown heroes – do to make sure they are part of this?” she asked.
