Liddell no prig
Saturday’ sobituary of Ben Cross unfortunately did the reputation of Eric Liddell a considerable disservice by its
reference to him as a “rath - er priggish Scots man ”, an unworthy comment which appeared to be linked to his stance of not competing on Sunday sand his Christian commitment.
From various con temporar y accounts it is clear that Eric Liddell was far from being priggish but instead enjoyed a good sense of fun and was highly thought of by teammates and members of the public alike who did not share his religious views.
And in the Japanese internment camp where he died he was a popular, inspiring and revered figure among fellow inmates of all ages.
