Real threat

-

It’ s not often I agree with Mar tin Redfern (Letters, 31 August) and his assertion that the BBC certainly does steer a middle ground in its reporting of politics is, of course, correct, but in his usual desire to attack the SNP over a handful of idiots who have nothing better to do than protest against the net work, he misses the greatest men ace toim partial reporting, hiding in plain sight – the cultural vandals of the Tory government.

The BBC is the envy of the world in its neutrality, editorial policy and professionalism of journalists. Due to its refusal to kowtow to the Tories in the same way certain tabloid newspapers do, its inde - pendence is being jeopardised through the threat to abolish the licence fee. As a former journalist who concocted false stories and was sacked as a result, criticism of the BBC is rich coming from Boris Johnson, but suppressing and demonising the media is yet another tactic he and Dominic Cummings have lifted from the Donald Trump Book of Political Chicanery.

This is the real risk to the world’s most respected broadcaster and those who believe in proper independent journalism should be very worried indeed.
