Dreadful legacy

-

David Millar describes the Scottish Government’ s approach to the corona virus pandemic as“the biggest experiment on human indoctrination since the Second World War” ( Letters, 4 September). This is a ridiculous comparison to make, and is insulting to those who have lost relatives or friends to the virus. Some 41,527 people in the UK have died after contracting the coronavirus, out of a total number of 340,000 cases. I doubt if their bereaved relatives would take as cynical a view of the situation as Mr Millar chooses to do. Many of those who survive the virus are left with lingering problems, which include fatigue, a racing heartbeat, shortness of breath, painful joints, loss of sense of smell, “foggy” thinking, and physical damage to the heart, lungs, kidneys and brain. That’s a dreadful legacy. Widespread inflammation and blood clotting could be responsible for this diversity of symptoms, according to medical experts.

Mr Millar should be thankful he doesn’t live in Mexico, where thousands of Covid- 19 patients are dying every week without having access to the intensive care facilities which we have in the UK. This virus is deadly, and should be treated with respect, not flippancy. CAROLYN TAYLOR
