Unlock secrets of treatment

CANCER RESEARCH UK

-

Cancer doesn’t discriminate – those working on the frontline of research and innovation can be affected just like the rest of us.

Laura Rooney, pictured, is a nurse working in clinical research who tests and evaluates new ways of treating cancer at the Beatson Clinical Research Facility in Glasgow.

Like many, she has had close family and friends affected by cancer and witnessed the desolation a diagnosis can bring.

She has also seen the massive benefits of new treatments as the result of research and knows that the work that is going on now brings huge hope for the future.

Laura says: “I’ve had close friends and family affected in recent years, and I have seen the complete devastation but also the benefits of new treatment options that are transforming survival rates. I hope in the future no- one has to be afraid when they hear the word ‘ cancer’.”

Cancer Research UK doesn’t simply focus on one kind of cancer – it aims to find new treatments and carry out research into more than 200 types of cancer.

Over the last 40 years, Cancer Research UK has helped to double cancer survival rates. Today, two in four people with cancer survive the disease. Its ambition is to accelerate progress so that three in four people survive cancer by 2034.

With cancer affecting one in two people and Covid- 19 causing disruption to clinical trials and vital research, ensuring Cancer Research UK’S life- saving work is funded for the future is crucial.

“Over the last few years, a third of Cancer Research UK’S funding has come from gifts in Wills. They are absolutely essential to what we do. They enable me to work clinically and support patients participating in trials,” adds Laura.

“I’m immensely grateful to all those who leave a gift in their Will to continue supporting our vital work. This means we can find the best ways to prevent cancer and detect it earlier, as well as treat those affected by the disease.” cruk.org/pledgescotland
