What’s the last piece of clothing you bought?

Black trousers made from Tencel, which is cloth made from sustainably sourced tree pulp using recyclable earth friendly solvents. It falls beautifully and feels like silk.

What are you addicted to buying?

Nothing. You speak of ‘ addiction’ and people do receive a small hit of dopamine ( the reward hormone) when they buy an item of clothing but it’s short lived and you can also feel this reward from buying an item in a charity shop.

Best ever bargain?

Some wool for a friend who loves knitting – about 30 years ago. She made me a thick woolly cardigan in a warm beige that is so gorgeous to wear that I’ve worn it on every cold day. We don’t consider enough how loved it makes us feel to wear clothes made by people that care about us.

Who has great style?

My daughter, who buys 90 per cent of her clothes from charity shops and car boot sales. She somehow looks smart and stylish in clothes that she has bought for next to nothing.

Name your favourite high street shop.

I don’t shop on the high street. Fast fashion is one of the worst industries for our planet. Watch the film, The True Cost, to understand why.

Any fashion disasters you’d care to tell us about?

Opinions differ about whether I should still wear the kaftan I’ve had since the Seventies.

What’s your favourite item in your wardrobe?

I keep a minimalist wardrobe and try to own as little as possible. My favourite item is a red silk shirt by the designer Rena Lange. I really splashed out on it at my local Fara charity shop – £ 8.

The Joyful Environmentalist is published by Watkins, priced £ 12.99
