ARTIST # 11 ZENUB FAYYAZ
In April this year, as a result of the Covid- 19 pandemic, the 2020 edition of the Edinburgh Art Festival had to be cancelled. However, as Edinburgh and its vibrant visual art scene begin to emerge from lockdown we are delighted to present this new weekly showcase, produced alongside Edinburgh Art Festival, featuring work by artists with digital and/ or physical exhibitions at the city’s galleries.
Zenub Fayyaz is 22 years old and lives in Musselburgh with her family. She loves travelling and tries to capture what she sees through photography or drawing, particularly buildings and animals. Earlier this year she joined the Stills School, an alternative, free photography school for young people who face different barriers to accessing the arts. The programme started just before lockdown began, so the majority of the teaching had to take place online rather than at the Stills centre in Edinburgh.
The photographs Zenub is now exhibiting as part of a new virtual exhibition on the Stills website were all taken before lockdown, but during lockdown she turned many of them into collages inspired by artists like kennardphillips, John Stezaker and Hannah Hoch, who she discovered through the School’s online tutorials.
Zenub’s photographs, alongside those her fellow recent Stills School graduates, appear in a new exhibition which can be viewed virtually and at the Stills Gallery until 24th October. The Stills School is currently accepting applicants for its introductory photography course, “Contact.” The course will be delivered online between 19 and 23 October, from 11am – 2pm every day.
