Reel challenge for young farmers

Up-and-coming young farmers are invited to hone their video -making skills with a contest to become Scotland’s climate friendly farming champion.

Hosted by NFU Scotland’s Next Generation group and supported by Royal Bank of Scotland, the competitio­n asks the tech-savvy to record a three -minute clip out lining how Scottish agricultur­e can best address environmen­tal issues, indicating the steps they are taking to reduce emissions and highlighti­ng the wider environmen­tal benefits that can be delivered.

The top prize is a state-of-theart drone with a tailored unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) upload and satellite imagery package from Soilessent­ials. Entries are needed by Monday February 1 2021, with the winner announced at NFU Scotland’s virtual AGM on Thursday February 11.

The panel of judges includes Scottish rural affairs minister, Mairi Gougeon, Claire Taylor of the Scottish Farmer and NFU Scotland’s Next Generation Chair, Orkney farmer Peter Moss .“we know Scotland’s farmers, crofters and growers have already taken steps to tackle climate change,” said Moss. “However, we also know that in the future, we are going to need to do more to tackle the climate and biodiversi­ty crises. That is why we want to hear fro mt hose-already taking steps to reduce their emissions.”

Gouge on said it was important everyone helped meet Scotland’ s ambitious climate change targets :“This joint initiative will highlight the importance of Scottish farming’ s response to climate change and also highlight the positive work already being done.”
