More than a year after the first case of Covid in the UK, Tory minister James Cleverly said the UK, Government needs “time to prepare” to introduce quarantine hotels.

@Rdunwin asked: “Is James Cleverly suggesting that because we've got worldleading genomics we should actively allow variants into the country so that we can then identify them and then close the border to the country it originated from? Isn't that... well... madness?”

@flackmill tweeted: “He was excruciating on the R4 Today programme this morning. Robinson asked how allowing people to enter UK from Covid hotpots with no follow-up checks was robust.. His answer – oh they have to do a pre-flight test. And how many people will they have contacted since that test?”

@raf609 rote: “So if I understand James Cleverly correctly… we deliberately let different mutations of the Covid virus Into the country and endanger thousands of lives… because we are good at detecting them!”

@velo_bristol wrote: “We used to have ‘world beating’, we've now been downgraded to "global leading" to adapt to incoming variants once they've been identified here.

Cheers James Cleverly.”

@Audreyaurus1 said: “Idiots to my left, feckless idiots to my right… we're doomed, people… it was nice to meet you all..”

@Jameswmonk wrote: “Vaccine passports are deeply unethical in principle, and dubiously unworkable in practice. So naturally we are gonna give it a go.”

@Suesuezep said: “James Cleverly says the Government needs ‘time to prepare’ to introduce quarantine hotels. Another year perhaps?”

@nugeyboy73 said: “Interesting to hear James Cleverly this morning say all countries control their own borders with regards a vaccination certificate to allow freedom to traveland yet we had to leave the European Union to control ours.”

@Gjssongwriter said: “James Cleverly is really not living up to his name on @ Bbcbreakfast. To be fair, [presenter] Charlie Stayt is giving him stick: ‘You’re very good at spotting the new variants after they’ve arrived.’ Best comment by a BBC journalist for ages!”

@C80YCE wrote: “James Cleverly. Disproving nominative determinism for the past half a century.”
