Vazquez out of Real’s clash with Liverpool
West Brom find their scoring boots at last to keep slim survival hopes alive
Battling West Brom kept their slim survival hopes alive with a deserved 3-0 win over Southampton last night.
The second-bottom Baggies closed the gap to Premier League safety to eight points with seven games left. Matheus Pereira's penalty and goals from Scotland forward Matt Phillips, pictured above, and Callum Robinson gave Albion their biggest league win of the season. The Baggies have now scored eight goals in their last two Premier League games, two more than they had netted in their previous 11 combined..
Real Madrid have been dealt another defensive injury blow with Lucas Vazquez ruled out of tomorrow’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Liverpool.
The Spain international, who played right-back in last week's 3-1 victory over Jurgen Klopp's side, was substituted in Real's El Clasico win over Barcelona at the weekend and turned out to have a cruciate ligament sprain in his left knee.
Vazquez, who has been filling in on the right side of defence due to injury to Dani Carvajal, was missing when Real named their 21-man squad to travel to Anfield. Carvajal was also absent from the list as were Sergio Ramos (calf) and Rafael Varane, who is still self-isolating after a positive Covid-19 test result.
Vazquez has been replaced by 20-year-old midfielder Marvin, who has made just three senior appearances. That meant no return for former Chelsea forward Eden Hazard, who is making his way back from a groin problem.
