We don't need Super League - we’ve got Scottish football

- Mark Atkinson mark.atkinson@jpimedia.co.uk

There were some great tweets doing the rounds on social media as the Super League went up in flames on Tuesday night.

“I’ve had rows with the missus that have lasted longer,” one user quipped. “The milk in my fridge has a better use-by date,” was another.

For just under 48 hours, the world was gripped by this radical, highly controversial tournament.

Announced on Sunday evening, the 12 founding clubs – six of which come from England – could not have envisaged the backlash, not just from football fans but society in general.

I cannot remember an issue in football sparking such outrage, and some have rightly pointed out that the recent high-profile racial abuse of Rangers player Glen Kamara warranted the sort of government intervention that was afforded to the Super League. Sometimes we get our priorities mixed up.

Nevertheless, the Super League is a big deal.

None of the Scottish teams were ever courted and while Celtic and Rangers are big fish in our pond, they are relative small fry in the global game’s ocean.

But, the ramifications for football in this country cannot be underestimated. Take six teams out of the English Premier League and the Old Firm suddenly become appealing substitutes.

How would European football look for Aberdeen and Hibs, who will likely fly the flag alongside the Glasgow duo next season?

The Super League shockwaves would have spread far and wide.

For now, the plan has been nipped in the bud.

We can enjoy the rest of the domestic season. Rangers can do the double and be invincible in the league for only the second time in their history. The race for third is still on, relegation is far from sorted and the Scottish Cup quarter-final lineup is intriguing. Further down, the Championship has so much riding on it with two rounds left and let’s not even try and predict who is going to win League One.

And then, in the summer, Scotland compete in a major tournament for the first time in 23 years. Euro 2020 is almost upon us. We don’t need the Super League to keep us entertained.
