Nazi-style salutes at Glasgow count site condemned by Humza Yousaf
A candidate for Glasgow Southside, wearing a homemade yellow Star of David badge, gave a Nazi-style salute on the counting hall floor at the Emirates Arena after subjecting Humza Yousaf to a series of raciallycharged questions.
Liberal Party candidate Derek “Deek” Jackson and three colleagues had pinned to their lapels handmade yellow Star of David badges with the word “unvax” written on them, as a protest against Covid vaccinations, he said.
Mr Jackson denied the star was related to the yellow star Jewish people were forced to wear by Nazis during the Second World War, or that the gesture they made was a
Nazi salute, claiming that as he had a heart painted on his hand, it was a “love salute”.
The four men were spoken to by police before entering the counting hall. Once inside they made a beeline for Mr Yousaf – standing for reelection in the Glasgow Pollok seat also being counted at that site – where they tried to question him about child rapes in Pakistan.
Mr Yousaf said: “Anybody witnessing that exchange would know they were directing questions to me about Pakistan because of the colour of my skin.”
The Liberal Party later issued a statement saying Mr Jackson’s membership has been suspended with immediate effect and that it is working with Police Scotland regarding the matter.
It added that Mr Jackson – who polled 102 votes in the seat won by the SNP’S Nicola Sturgeon – “acted entirely independently in adopting certain symbols and gestures” and “has massively misrepresented The Liberal Party and its core values”.
