A man has apologised after footage emerged showing England's chief medical officer, Professor Chris Whitty, being accosted in a park. Lewis Hughes reportedly said he was sorry for “any upset I caused”. The video shows two men laughing and jeering as they grab hold of Prof Whitty.

@Correiamark said: “They knew what they were doing, it was bullying, harassment and it was clear the distress they were causing. The pathetic excuse they were trying to get a selfie is obviously made up to try to get them out of trouble. It was disgusting behaviour and they should be ashamed.”

@Ladybrienne1 posted: “That’s not an apology. ‘Lad culture’ and ‘banter’ has a lot to answer for. It’s bullying and harassment and they should be prosecuted, if only to send a message to the rest of the ‘lads’. Most women know what this sort of harassment feels like. It starts with ‘smile, love’.”

@zcelticboy commented: “That kind of behaviour where you ‘corner’ somebody is extremely frightening for the victim. From the latter’s perspective, they might very well have been fearing for their life as things can get out of hand within seconds.” @Lalalampey asked: “Why doesn’t he have security? I’ve seen three videos of him over the last 18 months being harassed and verbally abused.”

US fashion giant Gap has confirmed it plans to close all its 81 stores in the UK and Ireland and go online-only. The firm said it would close all its stores "in a phased manner" between the end of August and the end of September.

@Abarthferrari said: “I don't understand how such companies think a purely online business can attract customers in the same way as, like lots of other people, I used to sometimes call in to have a look around. At this rate, the high street will be like a desert.”

@Kevsmit12741049 posted: “Online clothes shopping doesn’t work as there is no universal sizing. Every shop is different. Which means that something that previously took five minutes in a changing room will now take weeks of parcels going back and forth. How is that progress?”

@pagechord added: “My thoughts are with the staff who will be facing unemployment.”
