Scots’ tour game with Romania called off after more Covid cases

- By STUART BATHGATE

Scotland’s away fixture against Romania, due to have taken place next Saturday, has been called off after more members of Mike Blair’s squad tested positive for Covid-19.

Sunday’ s‘ A’ internationalagainst england was cancelled after four players returned positive results and another eight had to self-isolate, but it was hoped that a full isolation by the squad this week would be enough to allow the Romania game to go ahead.

Scottish Rugby released a statement yesterday saying they still plan for the game against Georgia to go ahead on Saturday 17 July, but that match, too, is clearly in severe doubt.

“Next Saturday’s Summer Tour fixture against Romania in Bucharest has been called off following the confirmation that several members of the Scotland Men’s camp have tested positive for Covid-19,” the statement read. “All players and staff are currentlyisolating as per scottish Government guidelines, and have been in enforced self isolation since travelling back from Leicester on Sunday. To respect medical confidentiality, Scottish Rugby will not name the individuals affected.

“At this stage, Scottish Rugby has every intention of fulfilling the following week’s international fixture against Georgia in Tbilisi (Saturday 17 July). However, the current situation remains fluid and that match is subject to review and further testing." Interim head coach Blair, pictured, said: “We’re massively disappointed that we’ll be unable to travel and face Romania next weekend, however it is 100 per cent the correct decision taking into account the health and wellbeing of this group. It’s clearly been a disappointing couple of days. However, since meeting as a squad over a fortnight ago, the determination and resilience shown by this group has been evident to see, and we’ll move forward with that georgia fixture very much in focus.”
