Green protests

With Green co-leaders Patrick Harvie and Lorna Slater expressing their support for demonstrators heading to Glasgow for the COP26 summit, we asked readers what they thought of the prospect of disruptive protests.

It’s a pity our leaders have so little regard for our planet and everything that lives on it that people are forced to demonstrate.

Susan Thomson

The Greens should be jailed for instigating and inciting trouble in Glasgow. They want the Glaswegians to give the protestors board and lodgings? Disgraceful.

Morag Brown

You have the right to vote because women staged disruptive protests. They set fire to post boxes, they broke shop windows, they chained themselves to gates. They stopped asking nicely when it became obvious that those in power were not listening.

Lindsay J Rea

If they want respect and positive publicity as a starting point they could focus on cleaning up Glasgow and then move on to other deprived areas in Scotland including some of our rivers and beaches as opposed to disrupting our lives and economy!

Paola Tracey Short

I am in favour of a move to a low carbon system but it cannot happen today, tomorrow or next week, it takes time. Meantime ordinary people who have little or no say in energy policy have their lives disrupted by this type of action which is already backfiring on the protestors as the public support they may have had diminishes.

Alan Hedges

We've had time. There isn't a lot left. Too many people are only worried about themselves. They're more concerned about being a little late for work than the climate emergency, which is happening now. Now is not the time to be looking for solutions, now is the time to be implementing them. And if you really don't think politicians are going to do anything (I think you are wrong) then protesting is exactly what is needed.

James Thomas Kilpatrick

They have rights. So has everyone. I have a right to travel unhindered by prats. It’s about time the police put a stop this nonsense. Or keep away and it will sort itself.

George Ian Smith

I don't mind protesting. What Lorna Slater actually said was protest could be disruptive as long as it wasn't putting people in danger.

Patricia Anderson Demonstrations are a right in this country, but disruption isn’t.

Fiona Ogilvie Taylor

The argument from these idiotic protestors to justify why they are protesting here rather than in any of the big six polluting counties is “we need to take the lead”. Let’s stop kidding ourselves, we’ve done our bit and now’s the time for the big six to catch up. Protesting in Glasgow is a total waste of time.

Dave Workman

Disrupting the event isn't going to help the problem. We need some serious, grown-up, non-political discussions. The point scoring has to stop.

Dorothy Pritchard Please let’s show Glasgow at it’s best. The world is watching.

Jane Huber The youth of this country should be kicking up a massive stink. What have they got to look forward to? A desert. They should be supported, not frowned upon.

Fraser Mcgregor

Hit the jackpot

The biggest lottery prize in UK history was up for grabs last night, with one lucky person in line for the €220 million Euromillions jackpot – equivalent to £184 million. What asked readers what they wold do with the money.

I’dputafivertoitandpayoff my debts.

John Woods I’d keep £20 million and make sure the rest goes to Scottish charities

Malcolm Finlayson I’d be very surprised as I don’t have a ticket

Johnny Mac

I might be able to afford a decent place in Edinburgh.

Darren Mackay

Can you buy a new prime minister?

Robert Ayr

The first thing I would do is give money to my old workplace. They do an amazing amount of work and fight hard for the little funding they receive. I saw the difference they made to children and adults with ASD/ disabilities and they deserve to know the pressure would be eased a little.

Sarah Mccabe

I’d share it with my family and friends

Diane Dean

I’d be waving goodbye to the family from the aeroplane.

Jackie Gibson

I’d buy some gas canisters.
