Starmer’s view

-

Sir Keir Starmer has admitted the “status quo” approach to Scotland cannot go on – but insisted Nicola Sturgeon has her focus “in the wrong place”. The Labour leader has asked former prime minister Gordon Brown to head up a Commission on the Future of the UK, which will look at where power ought to reside.

What Scotland needs is to dump Westminster rule and have a selection of Scottish-registered parties responsible to Holyrood with no interference from Westminster.

Patricia Anderson As long as you have a party in power that cower in criticism of their performance in education etc by always making it a constitutional issue no Scottish Parliament will ever work.

John Gillan Can’t imagine why anyone would listen to advice from this man, who cannot even manage his own party and seems to have very little understanding of Scotland.

Yvonne Mackay

Starmer and the Labour Party are totally irrelevant now in Scotland. And Gordon Brown is a balloon – all hot air and false promises. He conned the Scots last time. Never again.

Jane Mccann

The UK needs a rethink if it is to continue. No more of the tail wagging the dog mentality. More of four equal nations with an equal say and equal voice and vote. Then and only then can things progress in a fair manner.

Andrew Pete

Four equal nations can never be equal when there is such a huge disparity in populations – otherwise you could get the situation where a 3m population (Wales) “tail” is wagging the 55m population “dog”. That’s why we have representation at Westminster. Of course devolution was supposed to give us control of the important issues. Sadly we’ve consistently voted in a party to Holyrood with no interest in delivering a success of devolution. In other words – we’ve only ourselves to blame.

Dave Workman Gordon Brown wants a federation type set-up in the UK like the USA and Australia. What Scotland needs is to get rid of the SNP and vote in a coalition government who can run Scotland properly with the existing devolved powers, which are more than enough. The SNP have proved that they are a band of thirdrate politicians at best and couldn't run a bath.

John Bury Independence with all the powers, not just some of them, is the only thing that will work. We can never be equal partners any other way and the only party that can get us that is the party that has been running Scotland better than any other party ever has – the SNP.

Niall Hewitt More power to local government. Less to Holyrood.

Jim Quinn I have a feeling the the ‘status quo’ opinion of Keir Starmer in Scotland will continue for

All sounds great but the reality is councils have to fund the services the provide. The cost of doing this has risen hugely.

Lorraine Blyth What happened to the Scottish Government promise to abolish the council tax?
