Britain is prepared to deploy troops to protect Nato allies in Europe if Russia invades Ukraine, Boris Johnson has said in a Commons statement. Russia, which denies plans to invade, has built up troops at the border.

@Lewiseast2001 said: “I don’t want a war and I wouldn’t want things to escalate, but I completely agree with this if push comes to shove. Russia has no excuse if they choose to violate an independent country’s sovereignty and we must enforce that principle.”

@Ianwlee23 posted: “And this is how it starts. I say no, no, no! This has nothing to do with us. Keep our nose out.”

@Jward35 commented: “Anything to avoid facing the music at home. Worked for Maggie.”

@beltfedgob remarked: “I don’t think people realise just how small our armed forces now are. It’s laughable that the same people who spent the last ten years cutting them are now threatening to use them. We need to remember that before we go threatening Russia.”

@Archie167 observed: “I hope Johnson’s not deluded enough to think that the people of Britain will let him off by taking us to war with a nuclear superpower.” @morsebaz said: “As much as we like to think we are a military giant. We are a pimple on Russia's behind when it comes to weaponry and resources. I hope to God they don't invade.”

Guidance urging people to work from home wherever possible in Scotland is to be relaxed in favour of a "hybrid" system of office and remote working. Employers have been asked to phase workers back into spending some time in the office from Monday, 31 January.

@yogibaynes said: “Great to see Scotland taking a more balanced approach and recognise the world of work has changed for good.”

@citzgirl posted: “So workers risk catching Covid and potentially having long lasting side-effects just to keep Gregg's in business? Let people choose, save stress of commuting and cost.”

@crunchiebuttons commented: “About time that these lazy people got out of bed before 8.55am.”

@capxobvious added: “The workplace has changed and employers need to provide flexibility to attract the best staff.”
